This essay began in a beautiful classroom at Sacred Hearts Academy in Honolulu, Hawaiʻi. During junior-year U.S. history, I found myself asking: What is it about the American people—not merely their government—that feels so unique?
I have carried that question since 2011–2012, looking at it through different places, disciplines, and perspectives. The answer did not arrive as a tidy argument. It came as two birds: an eagle flying by day, and a phoenix rising through the long night.
I’m ready now to begin weaving those fragments into one piece. The Eagle and the Phoenix is where that journey starts.
The essay is attached below for you to read in your own time.
