What if the Pacific were understood not as a collection of distant islands, but as communities connected by an ocean?
Pons Oceani explores a Pacific systems architecture for strengthening the movement of goods, services, capability and opportunity between places.
Rather than beginning with one vessel, one port or one trade route, the project asks how the relationships between Pacific communities, maritime infrastructure, logistics and supply chains might be strengthened as a connected regional system.
Why Pons Oceani?
The Pacific Ocean is vast, but distance does not make its communities unrelated.
Island nations and coastal communities depend upon maritime movement for food, equipment, building materials, medicine, trade, repair capability and countless parts of ordinary life.
Yet smaller or more remote communities can face high transport costs, limited shipping frequency, fragile supply chains and difficulty accessing specialised services.
Pons Oceani asks whether these challenges can be examined together.
Not by imposing one enormous regional system, but by identifying where better connections between existing and future systems may strengthen movement across the Pacific.
Core Principle
Strengthen movement between places without erasing the independence of the places themselves.
Pons Oceani is not about centralising the Pacific.
It is about strengthening the bridges between communities.
The architecture should therefore remain adaptable to local geography, sovereignty, culture, infrastructure and economic need.
Relationship to Mare Nexus
Pons Oceani and Mare Nexus are complementary, but independent.
Mare Nexus strengthens places.
Pons Oceani strengthens movement between places.
A future Pacific network might connect ports or communities incorporating elements of Mare Nexus, but neither project depends upon the other in order to be useful.
Each should be capable of standing upon its own merits.
Version 1 — Pacific
Unlike Mare Nexus Version 1, Pons Oceani begins at the regional Pacific level.
But a Pacific architecture cannot simply be designed in New Zealand and exported outward.
Different Pacific nations possess different laws, economies, cultures, infrastructure, shipping needs, geography and development priorities.
Any future implementation would therefore require meaningful participation from the nations and communities involved.
The architecture may begin the conversation.
The people who know the waters must help chart the course.

Version 1 — Pacific
Originating Concept Architecture
Pons Oceani is not an established shipping service, approved government programme, funded transport network, completed economic model or commitment by any Pacific nation or institution.
Routes, vessels, infrastructure, economics, governance, customs arrangements, environmental effects, trade requirements and implementation would require examination by appropriately qualified governments, communities, maritime specialists, industry and other institutions.
Explore the Project
Pons Oceani is published for examination, discussion and further evaluation.
Its purpose at this stage is not to prescribe the final Pacific network.
It is to ask whether the bridges between existing systems can be strengthened—and, where gaps remain, whether new bridges are worth building.
