Mare Nexus explores whether selected coastal and maritime sites could operate as multi-purpose resilience nodes, connecting complementary systems where integration creates measurable value.

Why Mare Nexus?
Critical infrastructure often operates in separate silos even when those systems depend upon one another.
Energy supports communications. Communications support logistics. Ports depend upon power, water, maintenance and digital systems. Emergency response depends upon all of them remaining available when ordinary infrastructure is under pressure.
Mare Nexus asks whether some coastal locations could be designed more deliberately—so energy, communications, maritime capability, emergency resilience, research and environmental stewardship may support one another without being forced into one oversized system.
Core Principle
Connect what should be connected. Keep independent what should remain independent.
Mare Nexus does not assume that integration is always better.
It proposes that integration should be tested.
The purpose is not complexity for its own sake. The purpose is to identify where carefully designed relationships between systems may strengthen resilience, usefulness and long-term value.
Version 1 — New Zealand
The first version of Mare Nexus is framed for New Zealand.
New Zealand’s island geography, extensive coastline, maritime trade, renewable-energy capability, scientific expertise, exposure to natural hazards and relationships throughout the Pacific make it a useful environment in which to examine the concept.
Version 1 deliberately does not nominate a specific site.
The sequence should remain:
Need → Feasibility → Module Selection → Site Selection
The architecture should fit the terrain.
The terrain should not be forced to fit the architecture.

Mare Nexus is not a finished engineering design, approved infrastructure programme, funded build or site-specific proposal.
Technical feasibility, environmental effects, economics, governance, consultation, consenting and implementation require assessment by appropriately qualified specialists, communities and institutions.
